Day of Days. June 6th, 1944. In the pre dawn hours Easy Company jumps into Normandy. Lt. Winters is about to take command. Directed by Richard Loncraine and written by John Orloff Band of Brothers is a 2001 ten-part television World War II miniseries based on the book of the same title written by historian and biographer Stephen E. Ambrose. The executive producers were Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who had collaborated on the World War II film Saving Private Ryan (1998). The episodes first aired in 2001 on HBO and are still run frequently on various TV networks around the world. The narrative centers on the experiences of E Company ("Easy Company") of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. The series covers Easy's basic training at Toccoa, Georgia, the American airborne landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of Bastogne and on to the end of the war. The events portrayed are based on Ambrose's research and recorded interviews with Easy Company veterans. A large amount of literary license was taken with the episodes, and other reference books will highlight the differences between recorded history and the film version. All of the characters portrayed are based on actual members of Easy Company; some of them can be seen in prerecorded interviews as a prelude to each episode. My Fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph. Just prior to the amassed Allied forces setting sail for the invasion of France, the D Day Landings on 6th June 1944, the Allied Supreme Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower issued this message to the men under his command.
Vice President Joe Biden highlights the resurgence of the American automobile industry. Vice President Joe Biden credits the Obama administration's intervention for the American auto industry's recovery from "the brink of extinction" and pointed to Chrysler's early repayment of the federal loan that saved it from disaster. This week, Chrysler Corporation repaid its U.S. government loans six years ahead of schedule, and GM announced its Detroit Hamtramck plant was taking on three shifts for the first time in its 26-year history. In a visit to a Chrysler dealership in Manchester, NH, the Vice President spoke with the hard-working Americans who have helped rebuild one of America's great manufacturers. And as Memorial Day approaches, the Vice President encouraged all Americans to thank the servicemen and women of past and present who have sacrificed so much for our country. During a time when many Americans are overseas, it's vital we let our troops and their families know how much they mean to us all. GM and Chrysler were on the verge of collapse in the final days of the Bush administration after Congress failed to approve an emergency loan package. The Bush administration gave the companies $17.4 billion in loans and required them to develop a restructuring plan by mid-February 2009. Obama's administration pumped billions more into the carmakers later that spring but won concessions from industry stakeholders, allowing them to push GM and Chrysler through bankruptcy court in the summer of 2009. ----------- Uncle Sam and Martha Washington write- If the US auto industry had been allowed to fail, the cost in jobs and other economic losses would have been staggering. Some people have mentioned that Ford didn't need government money to stay in business, but if GM and Chrysler had gone bankrupt, Ford would have gone down with them. Obama, as usual, has been accused of every "ism" under the sun by the right wing, but he stood his ground and as an American, I am very proud that we have an intelligent and forward thinking President. All of the Republicans so called efforts in job creation is passive and reactive in nature. If we give more tax cuts we create jobs. If we deregulate we create more jobs. The President was proactive in both the stimulus and in the auto loan . In reality the Republican approach would of not gotten us out of the recession because their efforts would of been based upon factors that can not be defined. We do know this we had eight years of Bush Tax cuts and limited govt regulations and all we got was economic ruin at a cost of jobs and massive deficits. This is a massive victory for the US and validation of (another) pretty gutsy call by the White House. Also a clear teachable moment for the country regarding the Tea Party GOP's disdain for it. The GOP would have let them sink, just to keep Obama from helping a key industry recover from the damage they inflicted. Whether GOP want to admit it or NOT...this is one of Obama's greatest achievements and he will be remembered fondly for saving the American car industry. The GOP complained about government intervention rather than focusing on the repercussions which would have occurred had GM and Chrysler been allowed to failed. It would have eliminated thousands of dealerships (many of which are the largest private employers in rural small towns) plus negatively impact thousands of suppliers and ancillary businesses which depend on these conglomerates. Eventually the drop in demand would have hurt the "red" states too. In addition, we would have loss a manufacturing base which could have major strategic importance during a protracted global conventional war. I can't understand WHY the GOPers are allowed to continuously "wrap themselves in the flag" while simultaneously advocating policies which would have left our economy in tatters, put the United States at the mercy of foreign corporations, AND hurt millions of their fellow Americans by depriving them of their livelihoods. According to the GOP leaders ( Bachmann, Palin) this was socialism at its worse. Let's see loans provided to save an Industry and U.S. jobs with stock taken as collateral and the loans paid early with profit to the U.S. Treasury. Give me some more of that Socialism. LOL The right wing, as usual, sees this as some terrible socialist plot that Obama has pulled off, which of course is a complete falsehood. GM is about a year or two away from reclaiming their place as the largest, highest selling auto manufacturer in the world. Facts, they can be so inconvenient to the Tea Party, GOP, Koch Bros, Coats, Bucshon, Faux News agenda sometimes. Everyone who has a job because of the USA auto industry or buys a USA made auto should vote for President Obama. You would not have a job or the choices of an American made car were it not for The President and his administration. Thanks Mr. President for making the right decision and authorizing funds to help save the auto industry and many, many jobs.
The President and Vice President travel to Fort Campbell, Kentucky to pay tribute to troops returning from Afghanistan and the military and intelligence personnel whose efforts led to the death of Osama bin Laden and helped secure America's safety. Full Story President Obama flew to Fort Campbell, Ky., Friday 5/6/2011 to personally congratulate the special operations team responsible for the killing of Osama bin Laden, telling them and the rest of the troops on the base "job well done." Vice President Joe Biden joined Obama in privately thanking the Navy SEAL team just hours after bin Laden's terror network al Qaeda confirmed the death of their leader and vowed to avenge it and retaliate against Americans. Upon their arrival, they were greeted by Vice Adm. William McRaven, the head of the Joint Special Operations Command and the man who lead the covert assault on bin Laden's compound. Also on hand were Brigadier General Jeffrey Colt and Admiral Eric Olson, and Command Sergeant Major Wayne St. Louis, as well as Ann Campbell, the wife of Major General John Campbell, the commanding general of the 101st Airborne, and Marla Schroeder, the wife of Command Sergeant Major Scott Schroeder, the division command sergeant. Both Campbell and Schroeder are still deployed overseas. Obama and Biden met privately with the special forces team that conducted the mission then spoke to approximately 2,200 soldiers and service members gathered in a hangar. "I had the privilege of meeting the extraordinary Special Operations folks...," he told the crowd. "It was an opportunity for me to say for all the world, job well done, job well done." "They're America's silent professionals because their success demands secrecy," he continued. "They could have chosen a life of ease, but like all of you, they trained for years, they're battle hardened, they practiced tirelessly for this mission. And when I gave the order, they were ready." "These Americans deserve credit ... but so does every person who wears the military uniform. This is the finest military the world has ever known, and that includes you, the 101st Division." "Thanks to the incredible skill and courage of countless individuals over many years, the terrorist leader who struck our nation on 9/11 will never threaten our country again," Obama said to thunderous applause. Obama also declared the raid "one of the greatest intelligence and military operations in our nation's history" and vowed to defeat al Qaeda. "We have cut off their head and we will ultimately defeat them," he said. It really is a better exercise for the brain as well as the heart and soul. About the episode title- The Aramaic word for the neighbor we are to love includes all near us, all we think about and have thought about including ourselves. That word in Aramaic is "kareb". Christmas is a Christian holy day that marks the birth of Jesus, the son of God. The Gospels do not mention the date of Jesus' birth. It was not until the 4th century AD that Pope Julius I set 25th December as the date for Christmas. This was an attempt to Christianise the Pagan celebrations that already took place at this time of year.
